In this course students explore science fiction and fantasy authors and writing styles and then create a 3D fantasy world of their own. After an introduction to the sub-genres of science fiction/fantasy, we will learn how to research our ideas to make our fictional world viable. Developing characters, plotting, constructing a scene and narrative voice are part of any good science fiction/fantasy novel or short story, and we will complete exercises to enhance our understanding of these essentials. In the last part of the course, we will concentrate on symbolism and how to develop it.

This course focuses on two distinct literacy types of imaginative literature; science fiction, fantasy. The special characteristics of each group will be defined and applied to specific literary works.

Books read will include:The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, Science Fact and Fiction, The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, The Last Unicorn, The Hobbit, We Have Always Lived in the Castle.
